| As LIPA crews work to bring power back to the residents of Glen Cove, the sudden burst of warm weather gave the citizens a rest from the stressful weekend that brought on a sudden nor'easter with winds resembling that of past hurricane Gloria. From what started out as a strong storm, turned into the volunteer firefighters working tirelessly through the weekend, responding to multiple calls throughout the storm. The firefighters mobilized as per the Chief's orders to standby at the firehouse and work alongside the Mayor's Office, OEM, and GCPD, not only to be reactive to the sudden burst of alarms, downed wires, power outtages, and fallen trees within the entire boundaries of the city, but to also proactively work to make sure the residents on Morgan's Island were safe and secure. While the volunteer firefighters themselves had their families, homes, and blackouts to worry about, they put their call of duty to action - actively working around the clock to protect the city. Since the City of Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department is 100% volunteer, no additional costs went into funding this fire emergency action for the firefighter personnel - that means no overtime and no additional salaries. This is why your support during fundraising is especially important; which goes to the education, training, and the emergency preparedness of our fully volunteer companies. |
