| RASH OF BRUSH FIRES IN GLEN COVE written by SJB, 04.24.2008 |
| With then end of winter and April's showers for May's flowers, there is an abundance of dry vegetation around the City of Glen Cove. Due to the mix of dry vegetation and human causes, there have been a rash of brush fires in the City of Glen Cove. On Thursday April 24, 2008, around 6pm, there was another brush fire in Welwyn Preserve. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before it got out of control. Chiefs 5200, 5201 and 5203 responded along with first due Engine 528 and second due 524. The cause is under investigation. Because of Glen Cove's unique environment, suburbs nested in densly wooded areas, citizens need to be extra cautious during this transition of seasons. With proper landscaping maintenance, proper disposal of trash & flammable debris, and common sense, we can limit the amount of brush fires in the City of Glen Cove. That also includes properly extinguishing cigarettes, cigars, lit matches, and any other items that involve fire. With the ever growing popularity of backyard chimneas, please be aware of smoke and embers that emit from the top of the chimneas. Smoke and hot burning embers can cause a nuisance, false fire alarms, and embers can actually start fires in surrounding areas. Make sure to keep chimnea fires controlled and always keep an eye during it's use. Intentional setting of fires is extremely dangerous and illegal. Violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by law enforcement officials including the Glen Cove Police and Nassau County Fire Marshals.
